Education department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said the incident occurred during break time leading to Gani and other two pupils – 12-year-old Lindokuhle Dweba and Alindwe Nqubula, 11, – being taken to St Elizabeth Hospital. “Unfortunately, St Elizabeth Hospital which initially admitted all three of them, had to airlift Gani to Mthatha where he later succumbed to death due to the seriousness of the head injuries,” Mtima said.

Dweba, Mtima said, suffered a middle finger injury which later led to the finger being amputated to stop bleeding. Nqubula suffered a shoulder injury. The duo was treated and discharged from hospital. Mtima said 10 social workers were sent to the school to conduct counseling to teachers and pupils. “The move (counseling) is meant to address the traumatic experience suffered by them after witnessing this incident,” he said.

Education MEC Fundile Gade sent his condolences to the Gani family and wished a speedy recovery to both learners who survived the incident.
