With his province of Gauteng sitting proudly at the pinnacle of the matric results table, many on social media have called on the governing party to appoint Phanyaza Lesufi as the Minister of Basic Education after the 2019 elections.
Lesufi is the current MEC for Education in the most populous province in South Africa. He has been making waves in education by implementing trend-setting methods of dealing with placement of learners and the wholesale introduction of digital technology into teaching and learning.
The affable but no-nonsense politician has been lauded for his drive to build adequately resourced schools in townships and informal settlements.
He is known to take a tough stance on racist schools and abusive educators. Lesufi is at the forefront of undoing much of the apartheid-era exclusionist policies such as prescribed catchment areas for schools.
“Phanyaza for Minister!” has been a rallying call on Facebook and Twitter since the results came out.
