The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says it is ready to probe a R290-million tender linked to businessman, Edwin Sodi.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed the SIU to investigate the tender to refurbish the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works in Tshwane.

Ramaphosa signed the proclamation earlier this month after discovering that the refurbishment had not been carried out.

The probe will also look into allegations of maladministration and corruption in the affairs of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and to recover any financial losses suffered by the state in the procurement for construction of Phase 1 upgrades and urgent refurbishments.

SIU Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says they will also probe businesses linked to the tender and municipal officials involved in awarding it.

DA welcomes probe

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the news of the probe.

In a tweet posted yesterday, Tshwane Mayor, Cillier Brink, said this will also help in the possible recovery of money.
